In club football from Spain's Primera Liga...Barcelona hosted Levante on Sunday. Barca's Xavi wore the captain's armband on a special night at the Nou Camp.

The midfielder made his 549th appearance for the Catalans to equal the record held by Migueli. He skippered the side with Carles Puyol out injured, and fellow defender Gerard Pique suspended. That meant Sergio Busquets lined up in the back four instead of the midfield for the La Liga leaders.

Barcelona took command of the match after grabbing the lead just after halftime. Xavi found Dani Alves, then Pedro hit a shot which took a deflection past the Levante goalkeeper...Barcelona posted the first score of the game.

Then, Alves and Pedro combined for a second goal. This time, Pedro hit a first-timer which flew into the net for his eighth league goal of the season.

Pedro almost completed his hat-trick midway through the second half. Maxwell and Thiago set him up, but his effort hit the top of the crossbar.

Levante finally made its move with ten minutes to go. Valdo crossed to Christian Stuani. Levante put a point on the board, but Barcelona held on for a 2-1 win.

In other games... Deportivo Coruna took a 2-1 win at Athletic Bilbao and Malaga beat Sporting Gijon 2-1. Frederic Kanoute struck the only goal of the game as Sevilla grabbed a narrow 1-0 victory over Osasuna. And ten-man Valencia slid by Champions League rivals Espanyol 2-1 with a controversial winner deep into injury time.

Barcelona used its win to move five points ahead, at the top of La Liga. The champions have 46 points from 17 matches and pulled away from second-placed Real Madrid. Villarreal stays in third with 8 points, behind Real Madrid. Malaga dragged itself out of the bottom three with the victory. Real Sociedad is in last place.
