Lin Dan loses title in Birmingham men's badminton singles final

The men's badminton singles final at the All England Championships in Birmingham turned into a match everyone wanted to see. Reigning Olympics and Asian champion Lin Dan, taking on world number one Lee Chong Wei from Malaysia.

This was the 24th meeting of the arch-rivals, but Lin Dan has won 16 of the last 23 encounters. Lee won the All-England title in 2010, and he took the opening game, 21-17.

Lin Dan trailed 8-2 in the second game before fighting back to level at 17-all. But then a Lee smash put the Malaysian back in front.

Lin Dan was bidding to win a record open-era fifth men's singles All England title. But Lee reeled off the next three points to win the second game 21-17. He grabs his second straight title at the world's oldest badminton tournament.

Wagn Shixian takes women's singles title

Women's world number one Wang Shixian faced Japan's Eriko Hirose in the women's singles final. This match was tighter than some fans expected. Neither player led by more than four points in the first game. Wang Shixian finally prevailed 24-22.

So it was on to the second game, and it also proved to be a close one. Wang took command at 18-13, before winning it 21-18. She clinched the women's title 2-games-to-none. Wang is the 12th women's player to win the All-England final for China.
