Watney wins WGC Cadillac Championship

03-15-2011 14:44 BJT

The Blue Monster was hungry at the famed TPC Doral course on Sunday. But the final round of the WGC-Cadillac Championship produced a surprise result under perfect playing conditions in Florida.

The weather was just right for the players and some interested, and interesting, observers.

Six-time champion Tiger Woods has a record of finishing inside the top 10 every time he has played this event. He showed signs of returning to his best form with a six-under-par 66.

joined overnight leader Dustin Johnson on top of the leaderboard with a chip from the rough for a birdie at the 10th hole.

Anders Hansen moved into contention with a mammoth birdie putt on the 13th. The Dane went on to set the clubhouse lead on 13-under.

Overnight leader Johnson would launch a blast from the bunker at the 14th hole. He landed a nice approach, almost grazing the pin...and followed it with a birdie, tied once more with Watney.

And at the 15th, Watney left himself with a long par putt from off the green, but holed it in superb style with Johnson looking on from the tee.

Johnson tried to answer with his own long par putt on 16. It fell agonisingly short. The 2009 runner-up Watney had the outright lead.

And Watney birdied the last hole for a final round 67, and the biggest win of his career to date. The two-shot victory moves him up to second in the FedEx Cup points list. Watney advances to the brink of breaking into the world's top 10.
