The Dallas Mavericks hung a home court defeat on the Los Angeles Lakers in game 1 of their Western Conference semifinal series. Could the Lakers come back to even things up, or would the 2-time defending champions be victimized by another Staples Center surprise?

The Mavs' Jason Terry set up an airborne Tyson Chandler in the first quarter. Dallas played with confidence during the opening stanza in L.A.

But Lamar Odom connected with Andrew Bynum for the Lakers. Bynum's slam made it a one point game.

Then, Odom drove to the rim for a three point play. But the Lakers trailed the Mavericks by 2 midway through the second quarter.

Dirk Nowitzki put in 24 points for Dallas. His trademark fallaway didn't miss and the Mavericks maintained the lead.

And the German added three more from distance. The Mavs had a four-point lead.

Kobe Bryant scored for the Lakers. The champs had not lost the first two games of a playoff series since the 2008 NBA finals.

Dallas launched a big run midway through the fourth quarter. Jose Barea hit a floater. Dallas was strong in the late stages and waited for the Lakers to respond.

Nowitzki hit another long-range jumper. Two more for Dirk. Dallas pulled away with less than three minutes to go.

Kobe landed a triple of his own, but the Lakers were running out of time for a comeback. And Ron Artest lost his poise, he was ejected with 24.4 seconds left after hitting Dallas guard Jose Barea. A suspension could be in store for Artest as Dallas rolled to a 93-81 win.
