Peng Shuai crashes out of French Open

China's Peng Shuai, looking to move into the fourth round of the women's singles at Rolland Garros for the first time, had a tough challenger...the defending champion Francesca Schiavone of Italy.

The defending champion made a shaky start as Peng Shuai maintained serve to keep it at 1-1 in the first.

The Italian, whose grunts got louder with every point,was drawing all her strength to get on top of her opponent. she led the 5-3 in the first set.

Schiavone used her power rather than finesse to take a grip of the contest below cloudy skies taking set one, 6-3.

Leading the second set 2-1, Peng Shuai withdrew from the contest having already been checked twice by the on court doctor.

She had strapping on her left thigh and a plaster on her right knee but also appeared to have trouble breathing despite having the lead in the second set.

So, the Italian is into round four after offering commiserations to her opponent.

Last year's runner-up Samantha Stosur of Australia was knocked out after a 6-4 1-6 6-3 defeat by Argentina's Gisela Dulko. While Spanish seventh seed David Ferrer reached the last 16 on Friday with a comfortable straight sets win over Sergiy Stakhovksy, the ukrainian 31st seed.
