The Stadio Olimpico in Rome was packed to the rafters on Thursday night for the third of fourteen rounds in the 2011 IAAF Diamond League series. Most had come to see just one man, Usain Bolt.

The 24 year-old Jamaican was competing for the first time in nine months due to injury. The last time he raced was against Tyson Gay in Stockholm last August where Bolt's unbeaten two year run came to an end.

The pre-race antics were a familiar sight, but the race itself was something of a surprise.

Bolt got a terrible start and his long-time rival Asafa Powell looked to have the Olympic champion and world record holder beaten two-thirds into the race, but Bolt stepped up a gear and in the final few strides overhauled Powell to win in a photo finish.

His time - 9.91 - was relatively modest by his standards, but he - and the crowd - had their victory they wanted. It was Bolt's ninth victory in 10 races against Powell.
