The world of soccer is still reeling from an alleged bribery scandal and a rash of suspensions from football's world governing body FIFA.

Asian Football Confederation President Mohamed bin Hammam was one of the biggest names singled out. His suspension put the AFC in need of a new leader, and that seat has been filled by China's Zhang Jilong. He will temporarily take charge of the AFC as acting president, according to a statement posted on the organization's website Tuesday.

Zhang Jilong was the AFC's most senior vice-president, so he moved up when Bin Hammam was suspended over bribery allegations.

Zhang Jilong is the first Chinese to lead the AFC. He ran for a seat on FIFA's executive committee earlier this year, but lost a vote at the AFC's congress in Doha.
