One of Rio de Janeiro's most famous clubs, Vasco da Gama took on Coritiba in the first leg of the Copa do Brasil final with the support of a singing and dancing home crowd.

Coritiba stole the impetus early and were unfortunate not to go ahead when on-loan striker Bill fired in a shot from range that was well saved by home 'keeper Fernando Prass.

Vasco wrestled possesion back off the visitors mid way through the first half with Diego Souza leading the charge. The 25 year-old international dropped his marker inside the penalty area and utilized his sublime first touch to latch on to an inch-perfect pass. However, Coritiba stopper Edson Bastos was equal to the shot. It's nil-nil heading into the break.

After the restart the home side went in search of an opener and, thanks to some impressive counter-attacking, found one. 30 year-old forward Alecsandro stole in at the far post to add a deft glancing header to a pacey cross that was too fast for the keeper to respond to - and the hosts are in front with 40 minutes still to play.

In the closing stages Coritiba threw everything they had forward in the hope of an equalizer. It almost paid dividends when the industrious Bill, again, let fly from the edge of the penalty area - only for Prass to make a stunning save and keep his side in front. So Vasco de Gama claim the first leg victory 1-0.
