Dance sport is quickly gaining popularity in China. One of the main reasons is due to its inclusion at the Asian Games last year. Saturday, the China Dancesport Open tournament kicked off its second leg in Hong Kong.

This is the second time Hong Kong has hosted the event. This time, the top ten finishers from last year's Asian Games all came to compete for the honor to be called "China's best dancers".

The highlight of the night was the riveting performance of Asian Games champions Wang Wei and Chen Jin.

The duo have been boyfriend and girlfriend for the last eight years. The couple captured the title in the Latin Dance Division with their technical proficiency and polished chereography.

The win for Wang and Chen, means yet another national title for the two, but the pair will not rest on their laurels.

Wang Wei and Chen Jin, Hong Kong champions, said, "We still have a lot of catching up to do, compared with the world's best dancers, especially the Russian dancers who just won the Blackpool dance competition in England. We ended up 12th, the best result for Asians but still not good enough."

Another highlight was the debut of Hong Kong dancers at the tournament. They didn't make it to the final but their participation meant a lot to the home crowd.

Like many dancers in Hong Kong, Chen Wenjing and Lin Yu only turned pro after college.

Chen Wenjing and Liu Yu, Hong Kong contestants, said, "The competitors from the mainland are better and we need to learn from them. They have been dancing longer than we have. I mean, we couldn't dance full-time until after reaching our academic goals, whereas many of our peers turned pro much earlier than we did."

Saturday's event was also a rare opportunity for dance lovers in Hong Kong to watch Asia's finest dancers up close.

Thousands of spectators filled the Queen Elizabeth Gymnasium in Wanchai, on Hong Kong island. Most say they are impressed.

A spectator said, "I love dancing and it's really great to come here and watch them."

"I was impressed. Honestly speaking, I think many maindland dancers are really good. It's probably because they train very hard," said a spectator.

Hong Kong is the second stop of the dancesport tournament. The next leg of the event will be in Beijing next month.
