The second stage was a 23-kilometer team time trial.

The Saxo Bank team includes triple defending Tour champion Alberto Contador. It was the first on the course, but the team ended in eighth place, 28 seconds back. The Spaniard, Contador, finished one minute 42 seconds behind the leader.

Belgian first-stage winner Philippe Gilbert was forced to give up his yellow jersey. His Omega Pharma Lotto team finished 40 seconds behind the winners.

Cadel Evans finished second behind Gilbert in the first stage, and he had to settle for second again with his BMC team mates. He's off to a good start anyway. Evans seized the yellow jersey as a world champion for a short while last year, before being forced out of the Tour because of injury. He finished as Tour runner-up in 2007 and 2008.

The HTC-Highroad squad found trouble at the start. It lost Bernard Eisel due to a mishap after only 500 meters.

So the day belonged to Garmin-Cervelo team riders. They took the lead as Norway's Thor Hushovd swapped the world champion's rainbow jersey for yellow. The nine-man squad clocked 24 minutes 48 seconds in the time trial at Les Essarts. The areas of Olonne sur Mer and Redon host the third stage on Monday.
