China's National Swimming Team is currently involved in closed-door training at the General Administration of Sport headquarters in Beijing ahead of this months World Championships in Shanghai. But former Champion, Zhang Lin, is not in the squad. He chose to train elsewhere away from the fuss of the national squad.

Zhang Lin prefers to prepare for the upcoming Swimming World Championships his own way.

In what sees as a failure, Zhang Lin didn't win a single event at last year's Guangzhou Asian Games. After his lackluster performance he quit the national team to try and find the key to getting back to his best. He effectively disappeared for half the year.

Zhang Lin said, "My disappearance is not because of my failure. I can't change what goes on around me, what I can do is to make adjustments to my own performance."

Zhang Lin will only contest the 4x200 metre relay at the World Championships. He will not race the 400m, 800m or 1500m freestyle, the events he excelled in. Actually, Zhang made the qualifying times to compete in these events, but he said he wants to give more chances to the rising stars.

Zhang Lin said, "I don't have the form to compete in these events, I just want to re-adjust this year. So I should give the chance to other swimmers."

July 27th will mark the one year count down to the London Olympics and that may be the end of the road for Zhang. What will next year hold for Zhang Lin? The swimmer says no matter what happens, he will still be himself.
