Closing ceremony for 14th FINA World Aquatic C'ship

A closing ceremony has been held for the 14th FINA World Aquatic Championships in Shanghai. Over the past two weeks, eyes have been on the Shanghai Oriental Sports Center where the event has been held.

Leaders from the Shanghai Municipal government and FINA President, Julio Maglione, presided over the closing ceremony which had water as its theme. The ceremony focused attention on the environment- stressing a low-carbon lifestyle.

The two-week tournament, which began on July the 16th, saw athletes compete in five aquatic disciplines, including swimming, water polo, diving, open water events and synchronized swimming. The US won the most, 17 gold medals, followed by China with 15 and Russia with eight.

FINA President Julio Maglione expressed his thanks to the Chinese government and the people.

More than 5,700 athletes from 181 countries and regions took part in the championships. The FINA World Aquatic Championship is held every two years, and the next one, in 2013, will be held in Barcelona.
