Two weeks of aquatic excitement came to an end in Shanghai on Sunday. Athletes and officials drew the curtain on the 14th FINA World Aquatic Championships with a spectacular closing ceremony at the Oriental Sports Center.

Leaders from the Shanghai Municipal Government and FINA President, Julio Maglione, presided over the show. The theme was simply and appropriately titled "water." The message focused attention on the environment, stressing a low-carbon lifestyle. More than 30 athletes took part in the ceremony, including world champions Wu Minxia and Michael Phelps.

The two-week tournament saw athletes compete in five aquatic disciplines, including swimming, water polo, diving, open water events and synchronized swimming, and two world records were broken.

The USA ranked first on the medal tally with 17 golds. The Chinese team was the runner-up with 15 gold medals. Russia was third with 8 golds. The FINA World Aquatic Championship is held every two years, and the next one will go to Barcelona in 2013.
