The biggest rivalry in major league baseball is adding another chapter in Boston this weekend. The Red Sox took on the New York Yankees with first place in the American League East at stake.

Red Sox star Dustin Pedroia lit up the scoreboard in the third inning on Friday. He hit a ball off the Green Monster in left. Jarrod Saltalamacchia scored and gave Boston a 2-0 lead.

Yankees down 2-1 but Robinson Cano gets an RBI off a double-play. Derek Jeter scores to tie the game up. And a sharp shot down the third base line plated another run for the Yankees. Nick Swisher's hit bounced off a fan and gave New York a 3-2 advantage.

That left it up to Mariano Rivera and another classic closing for the Yankee veteran reliever, strike three called, and New York claims a 3-2 victory on Friday. But Boston came back with a win on Saturday which again tied the two teams at the top of the American League East.

Chicago White Sox beat Minnesota Twins 6-1

The Chicago White Sox are still hoping for a post-season berth in the American League, and they'd meet Minnesota.

Chicago capitalized on an early Minnesota mistake. A wild throw to third base resulted in Juan Pierre scoring the first run of the game. The White Sox led it 1-0 in the fifth.

In the sixth inning, Chicago up 2-0 and Danny Valencia at the plate for the Twins. He goes to center field for an RBI single. Minnesota closes the gap to 2-1.

Minnesota put the game-tying run on base in the eighth inning, but Valencia was caught looking for strike three and Chicago ended the threat.

The White Sox added to their advantage in the ninth. Joe Nathan's wild pitch led to an off-target throw to second. A run scored and Chicago went up 3-1.

And then Brent Lillibridge put the game away. He pinch-hit for the struggling Adam Dunn and got this ball to carry all the way over the wall for a two-run dinger. Chicago stays six and a half games behind AL Central leader Detroit. A 3-game sweep over Minnesota would boost the Sox playoff hopes during the month of August.
