The 16th-seeded Juan Martin del Potro made a confident return to tennis action after being sidelined with a right wrist injury for most of the season. He won the first set over Finland's Jarkko Nieminen, 6-4.

Then the 22-year-old Argentine swept through the second set with ease. He converted three break point chances on the way to winning the set 6-0 and sending Nieminen to the sidelines of the Rogers Cup. Del Potro looked dominant on his way into round two.
