Stankovic Cup: China beats Angola 64-54, end losing steak

After seven straight losses through two legs of the Stankovic Cup, China's men's basketball team was hoping to turn things around in their final game in Guanzhou on Tuesday. China, took on Angola in the third place game.

China, looking to stop their slide, would lean heavily on Washington Wizards forward Yi Jianlian in this one. He opens, the scoring off the fast break. Later in the opening frame, China, up three. And Zhang Qingpeng...extends it to six, the hoop the harm, giving China the 10-4 lead.

China, also playing some stifling defence in the first quarter. They were able to contain the Angola team, and open up a healthy lead after the first Q. Second Q, and China begins up run away with this one. Zhang Bo's three, putting the Chinese team up 15.

And Yi Jianlian, would make the lead 20, as he knocks down the jumper, and one. Yi, leading the team with 22 points and 8 rebounds on the night. By the end of the third, China led by as much as 24, but the African side would begin to come back and make China sweat a bit in the fourth.

Angola's comeback bid though, would come up short as China was able to hold on for a 64-54 win, their first in 8 games. China's Yi Jianlian, happy with the outcome...but knows there is still work to do ahead of an important fall for the national team.(TAKE SOUNDBITE)

Yi Jianlian said, "We were active with our defence. The offence in the second quarter was also crucial. Today's win will be an encouragement for the team after those losses. We improved our play a bit today...but there were also errors and mistakes. I think there is still a long way to go in terms of our preparation for the Asian Championships. "
