German qualifier Philipp Petzschner and France's Gilles Simon had only met once before in the Mercedes Cup in 2009 on clay, a match which Simon had won in straight sets. On the hard courts of Montreal it was a different story as Petzschner, who is 80th in the current ATP World Rankings, comfortably got past his opponent 7-5, 6-2.
