Novak Djokovic became the first man to win five Masters titles in a season when he beat American Mardy Fish in the final of the Rogers Cup in Montreal on Sunday.

Djokovic had won all six of his previous meetings with the American, and he broke to lead 4-2 before holding serve to love with an instinctive volley. The world number one went on take the first set 6-2.

Fish failed to convert one of six break points in the opening set, but he made amends in the second set with a backhand pass putting him 3-2 ahead. The 29-year-old has risen to a career-high number eight world ranking after a fine run of form in recent months, and he combined power with a deft touch on his way to taking the set 6-3 to set up a decider.

In the fifth game, Djokovic set up three break points and converted the first of them thanks to some superb scrambling and an overhead into the net from the sixth seed. That was the beginning of the end as Djokovic served out for a 6-2 3-6 6-4 victory to reclaim the title he first won in 2007.

The new 2011 Rogers Cup Champion said, "Yeah, it looked for a set and a half...I mean, I was playing well. I was returning great, serving well, playing from the baseline quite aggressive, but I got him back in the match. I think he took his chances, he broke me in the second set in a good time and I started decreasing a little bit the speed of the ball from the baseline and it was a very even match up to the end."
