Former World No. 1 Serena Williams took on Australia's Samantha Stosur for the women's crown. The first eight games went with serve until Williams made the breakthrough in the ninth game. Unseeded at the tournament because of her long battle with injury, Williams wrapped up the opening set 6-4 in only 40 minutes

Stosur was clearly rattled and made a poor start to the second set, losing her opening service game. The Australian, who will return to the top 10 in the world rankings on Monday, began to fall away as the 29-year-old Wiliams, fresh from victory at Stanford a fortnight ago, opened up a 5-1 lead in the second set and then served an ace on match point to complete a 6-4, 6-2 thumping in 78 minutes.
