For some athletes, competing at the Universiade is all about winning, but for a competitor from Panama, just seeing the competition up close is enough to get his heart thumping.

Table tennis is a national pastime in China, but for a young boy from Panama, taking part in the competition at the World Universiade is a new experience. Panama has three athletes competing in Shenzhen but Gilberto Mauricio is the only one table tennis player. His university major is in architecture, and he has his own ideas about how to excel in table tennis.

Gilberto Mauricio, Panamanian table tennis player said, "Playing the ball gave you the best control, whatever you want."

The 22-year-old has been playing table tennis for two years, and this is the first time he's been to China to compete. The trip to these games excited him. He's never had the chance to witness such a high calibre competition before.

Gilberto Mauricio said, "The first time I see such a high level competition and high level players, so near, so close to me...heartbeating experience."

Gilberto's own competition is over fairly quickly, as the more experienced players progress to the next rounds. He then uses his free time to soak up the atmosphere and learn what he can from others.

He says his dream is to become the best table tennis player in Panama, and he hopes to come to China again to learn more table tennis skills. Although this players experience finished quickly, his career has just begun. Like the slogan said: start here, make a difference.
