It was a special event for American fans who seldom get a chance to see their favorite team in-person. Duke University games are among the toughest sports tickets in the USA.
John Gordon, supporter of Duke said, "Ever since I was a kid, I used to go to Cameron Indoor Stadium. It was a fun thing to do, to see them in Beijing, and we got front row seats, so it's a little bit of home. "
The friendship battle marked a return to basketball in a big-time setting in Beijing. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski was back in the arena where he guided a squad of NBA all-stars to an Olympic gold medal in 2008, and another Olympic hero made his own return. Yao Ming surprised the crowd with a courtside appearance. Yao later accepted a gift from Coach K and Duke University, and the coach talked with Yao about the retired NBA star's continuing contribution to basketball in China.
Mike Krzyzewski, Coach of Duke said, "And I encouraged him to stay involved in some way, with basketball and with his country. He has a big presence, not just a physical presence, but a big spirit and love for the game. "
The NBA may own the hearts of international basketball fans, but the Blue Devils and their coach set the highest standard in the sport for young players in the United States. Krzyzewski's assistant coaches are all former Duke point guards who are passing the lessons of leadership to the current crop of stars. The final score was a lopsided win for the American collegians, but getting the chance to test themselves against some of China's best was a great learning experience.
