In Italy's Serie A, a perennial league championship contender went on the road to nab a win against a newly-promoted club. Mighty Inter Milan looked to shrug off a miserable start with an easy win by Novara.

Inter already fell to Turkey's Trabzonspor in the Champions League last week. The squad moved in on its first goal of the match, but Dutch playmaker Wesley Sneijder's left-foot rocket sailed over the bar - no score.

In Italy's Serie A, a perennial league championship contender went on the road to nab a win against a newly-promoted club. Mighty Inter Milan looked to shrug off a miserable start with an easy win by Novara.

But the Dutchman kept trying. Sneijder fired another blast, but the Novara's keeper made a critical stop.

38th minute, the score is still 0-0, but Novara's Riccardo Meggiorini made a steal. Then he dropped the ball into the back of the net from close range. The newcomers to Serie A stunned Inter Milan with a 1-0 lead.

The Novara players continued to frustrate Inter with a surprisingly dominant performance. Julio Cesar was quick to deny another goal from the challengers.

And the desperate effort for an equalizer led to Giampaolo Pazzini's drive. He was just inches away from the far corner.

It got worse for Inter in the 85th minute. Andrea Ranocchia toppled Takayuki Morimoto in the area. The Inter player was sent-off. Marco Rigoni fired-in the penalty for a 2-0 lead. The upset seemed certain for Novara.

Esteban Cambiasso rifled home a goal a minute from time. Inter kept its hope for a win or a tie alive.

But the home side would not give in. Rigoni slotted in a clincher in stoppage time. His rebound score sealed a shocking 3-1 defeat for Inter Milan, and heaped the pressure on beleaguered coach Gian Piero Gasperini. Novara won for the first time since returning to Serie A after a 55-year absence.

Inter has taken only one point from three Serie A games this season and lies in a lowly 17th place. Bitter rival and defending champion AC Milan is also off to a slow start, just one place ahead of Inter, but with one game in hand. Napoli and Juventus are the pacesetters in Serie A so far. Novara moved up to 7th place with its big win.
