In the English League cup, it was a mismatch on paper as Manchester United met Leeds United. The two teams are in different leagues -- literally and figuratively, which prompted Sir Alex Ferguson to fill his Man U squad with mostly reserves.

And lland Road was the site of the third round League Cup match. And despite playing in the league below their illustrious opponents, Leeds started brightly.

Manchester United's Ryan Giggs (R) celebrates scoring with Federico Macheda during their English League Cup soccer match against Leeds United in Leeds, northern England September 20, 2011.

Within the first five minutes Leeds gets several chances from within the area -- but the Man U defence blocks all the attempts. 15th minute now and Man U on the attack. A great display of passing leads to a Michael Owen chance on goal. The veteran makes no mistake in giving the visitors a 1-nil lead. Quite a luxury for Man U to have a striker like Owen on the bench.

Owen would strike again in the 32nd minute -- his first goal displayed a gentle finish. The the second was a brilliant blast from just inside the home side's penalty area. Red Devils up 2-nil.

At the end of the first half Ryan Giggs beats his man to the area and fires a shot on goal. The shot takes a deflection and ends up in the net. A lucky break for Man U, unlucky for Leeds who fall behind 3-nothing.

Man United would control the match the rest of the way. All that was left to decide was if Leeds could break the goose egg. They get a chance in stoppage time at the end of the match, but substitute Ramon Nunez fires wide. Man United easily beat Leeds United 3-nil.
