Team Telefonica became the first crew to arrive in Spain for next month's Volvo Ocean Race. The team arrived in the port city of Alicante where the first leg of the race will be held.

Steering their latest generation Volvo Open 70, Team Telefonica racked up more than nine-thousand nautical miles of training in the past four months before arriving at Alicante.

The team is expected to enjoy plenty of home support with seven Spaniards in the crew. Leading the team are Olympic champions Iker Martinez and Xabi Fernandez. The pair is Spain's most successful sailing duo, winning gold at the 2004 Athens Olympics and silver in Beijing four years later. Starting November 5th, the first of the nine-leg Volvo Ocean Race begins from Alicante through the Atlantic to Cape Town, South Africa.

Iker Martinez, skipper of team Telefonica, said, "We've been training a lot before coming here. On our mind was the ideal plan and that was to arrive here with everything done, with the boat ready to go, with good training and with all the crew feeling good and feeling happy on board. So I think we are pretty close to what we wanted."
