The new CBA season is now less than a month away from getting going and it should be an interesting year, as a number of NBA players will be suiting up for Chinese teams thanks to the lockout.

However, one team that will not be featuring NBA stars is the 8 time champion Bayi Rockets. Peter Koveos has more on the challenges facing the team representing China’s Peoples Liberation Army.

With less than three weeks until the new CBA season tips off, the Bayi Rockets, one of the league’s traditional powers, are hard at work looking to improve on a 7th place finish last season. The team knows however, they could be in tough as a number of their closest rivals are welcoming locked-out NBA players into the fold.

Adijan, head coach, said, "I think this season will be more competitive and difficult. We will have

to work harder to maintain our momentum and solve our problems. We have made some changes to our playing style according to our new line-up."

The Rockets have won a record 8 CBA titles, but the team has struggled to return to championship form of late - last winning in 2007. The Army-based team does not allow imported players, which means they will be facing a new wave of NBA stars this season. The team’s coach though is ready for the challenge.

Adijan, head coach, said, "I believe it’s a chance for our players to improve while we play those NBA players. We don’t see them as unbeatable. They’ve reached such a high level as a result of hard work to improve their skills. This is what we need to do."

Adijan says he is looking for the young players on the team to step up in a big way and contribute this season. Veteran leadership will again come from Chinese star Wang Zhizhi, fresh off leading China to a win at this year’s FIBA Asian Championship.

Wang Zhizhi said, "We will play and fight one game after another. We are in a process of transition in our squad. There will be wins and losses."

Bayi will fine tune their lineup for the new season with back-to-back pre-season games this weekend.
