In the final round of the WGC-HSBC Champions in Shanghai, overnight leader Fredrik Jacobson expected to win his second title in 2011, but an unexpected contender built a last-minute challenge on Sunday afternoon.

Jacobson began the day with a two-shot lead. But the Swede failed to keep his advantage. He shot a dismal 71, and it deprived him of his hard-fought championship. But former world No. 1 Martin Kaymer of Germany roared up the leaderboard. He was in superb form on Sunday, highlighting a strong finish with a great series of clutch shots.

Kaymer started the day five shots off Jacobson’s pace. Then, he swept clear at the top of the chart with a run of nine birdies over his final 12 holes. Kaymer’s streak couldn’t be stopped. He shot a brilliant 63 to win the Champions event. The 26-year-old finished with a total of 268, 20-under par. Jacobson finished the tournament three strokes behind, and Briton Graeme McDowell came in third.
