Real Madrid visited Ajax for their Group D match. Real opened the scoring after 14 minutes when a pass from Kaka beat the Amsterdam offside trap and put Jose Callejon in a scoring position, who made no mistake.

Ajax, who needed only a draw and started with a seven goal advantage over Lyon, were unlucky when first a half goal by Nicolas Lodeiro was denied as his header was ruled out for offside.

Vurnon Anita’s spectacular drive, which was deflected in by teammate, also fell victim to the referee, disallowed due to offside again. Four minutes before the interval Real’s Karim Benzema set up Gonzalo Higuain to double the lead.

Callejon completed the scoreline for Real, when he took possession of the deep cross in the area and rounded the keeper before firing a drive into the net. 3-0. Real was moving on, but Ajax would end the night in absolute heartbreak more on that in a moment.
