After going down to Barcelona in their weekend La Liga clash, Real Madrid was hoping to pick it up a notch against third tier side, Ponferradina, in Tuesday’s round four of the Copa del Rey.

In the teeming rain of Leon and in front of a less than amused-looking Jose Mourinho, Ponferradina put up a spirited performance against Real Madrid in the first leg tie.

But some lower level defending proved their undoing in the 29th minute. No one cut out Sami Kherida’s cross with Jose Callejon racing through unchallenged. The defending champions lead 1-0.

Real were almost embarrassed in the 51st minute. Antonio Adan would not have stopped the ball if without the crossbar.

The home side were helped 20 minutes from time. Raul Albiol was sent off after earning his second yellow card for a rash challenge.

But in the 74th minute, Cristiano Ronaldo made it safe for the visitors. Real Madrid took away a 2-0 victory. The return at the Santiago Bernabeu on the 20th of December should be a formality.
