Groupama wins the second stage of Volvo Ocean Race

The second stage of Volvo Ocean Race which was being held in the United Arab Emirates. Team Telefonica of Spain tried to tighten their grip on overall points lead, but France’s Groupama had other ideas.

This was the first time its 38-year history the event had been staged in the Middle East. A five-vessel fleet began the contest in Sharjah.

The race turned into a battle between Telefonica, Groupama, and CAMPER from Australia. Telfonica set the pace early on. But inside the last quarter of the race, Groupama closed the gap to two boat lengths within 20 nautical miles of port.

Franck Cammas’ team then surged past the Spaniards to go over the finish line in Abu Dhabi, claiming their first victory of the race.

Telefonica were runners-up by less than a minute, while Camper finished in third. On the points chart, Team Telefonica won the second leg with 29 points.

CAMPER took second with 24 points, followed by PUMA with 19 points.
