Barcelona’s Lionel Messi is still basking in the glow of his third striaght FIFA Player of the Year award. Barca captain Carles Puyol says his teammate will be the best footballer for a long time to come.

Reporters asked Puyol in a news conference what gives Messi the edge, and Puyol cited the Argentine striker’s strong drive to win every game.

The Barcelona captain mentioned another teammate, Xavi Hernandez, also deserves the Ballon d’Or award, but added that Messi is simply unbeatable at the moment.

Messi struck 12 goals for Barcelona in last season’s Champions League, making him the circuit’s top scorer. He added 31 in the team’s succesful run in La Liga.

The 24-year-old Messi led Barcelona to five major trophies in 2011, and he received just under 50 percent of the votes in the World Player of the Year selection.

Puyol said, "He always wants to play against every rival, every game. I think that is very important and what makes him the best and he is going to be the best for a long time. Obviously we would be excited about midfielders Xavi or Iniesta winning it because they deserve it too. But I would tell him to beat all the records because he can."
