Gymnasts Daniel Purvis and Daniel Keatings were competing at an Olympic qualifying event in London, and they needed to be at their best if they had any hope of making it to the 2012 Games.

The British team, featuring Olympic pommel horse bronze medalist Louis Smith and 2009 world all-round silver medalist Keatings, had to wait until 199 days before the Games kick off to secure their place in the final lineup.

London on January 10, 2012.

They failed to make the cut during last October’s world championships in Tokyo. Britain finished with 358.227 points, more than seven points better than nearest rivals France.

Purvis earned the team’s highest score of 16.266 with a dynamic, twisting routine. If he can repeat that performance at the Olympics, he will be one of the favorites for a medal. Keating, Purvis and company opened up a 6.375 point lead with one apparatus remaining, and decided to enjoy their moment in the spotlight.

They effectively turned their routines on the parallel bars into a judged exhibition. And to cap Britain’s day, Purvis finished first and Keatings third in the all-round standings.
