Leg one of the League Cup semi-final between Liverpool and Manchester City. Roberto Mancini’s men, looking to bounce back in leg one at home after City’s FA Cup loss to rivals Man United. But they would have to make do without captain Vincent Kompany who was handed a four-match ban following his dismissal in Sunday’s derby against Man U.

Manchester City is also looking to overcome the loss of Yaya Toure to international duty and playmaker David Silva to injury, and it would be Liverpool dominating early on. Just four minutes in, Andy Carroll had a great chance, but he would shoot straight at Joe Hart.

The Reds continued to threaten as Steven Gerrard curled one towards the far corner on the 10th minute. Hart, making another solid stop to keep it scoreless.

One minute later, off the corner from Gerrard, Stewart Downing fired in front of the box. And once again, Hart kept his sheet clean as he denied the deflected shot.

Gerrard scored on his first Carling Cup start since December 2007.

City slumped to back-to-back home losses for the first time since February 2008.

But Liverpool would eventually break through after Stefan Savic made a clumsy tackle on Daniel Agger in the penalty area. And, this time Hart would be beaten from the spot.

Gerrard, who had just returned from a long layoff with a groin injury, clinically converted the penalty. The Reds led 1-0 after 13 minutes.

City’s performance improved after Mario Balotelli was replaced by Samir Nasri before halftime. In the 43rd, the former Arsenal midfielder rifled from just outside the area, but his effort was denied by Pepe Reina with a diving save.

City would be granted a chance 11 minutes after the break. Sergio Aguero latched on to a careless back pass by Martin Kelly. But the Argentine striker failed to kick it home in front of an opened goal. City captain Kompany forced to watch and hope his teammates would find an equalizer.

They would come close, Micah Richards coming close with the header, but Reina was up to the task as Liverpool take the advantage with the 1-0 away win as they attempt to reach the final of the League Cup for an 11th time.
