2012 Dakar Rally: Roma, Bort take stage 10 honors

Stage 10 of 2012 Dakar Rally brought the field from Iquique to Arica in Chile. And heading into the tenth leg, there was a little controversy surrounding the cars category as US Hummer driver Robby Gordon has been left facing possible Dakar disqualification.

Gordon, won the 9th stage, but the Car Race Officials’ Committee has decided that his Hummer’s motor does not meet specifications. He should be kicked out. Gordon has appealed, and has been allowed to race until the outcome of his appeal is heard.

Once racing got under way, Frenchman Stephane Peterhansel was second in his Mini and retained the overall car lead.

Spain’s Nani Roma would take stage 10 in his Mini and is second overall. Peterhansel crossed the line just 21 seconds behind him.

Stage 10 of 2012 Dakar Rally brought the field from Iquique to Arica in Chile.

Motorbike stage winner Joan Barreda Bort rode his Husqvarna over the finish line after 4 hours 18 minutes 43 seconds.

Third place went to South Africa’s Giniel de Villiers in a Toyota, nearly eight minutes behind Roma. De Villiers is fourth overall. Robby Gordon was fourth on the stage and is third overall.

Motorbike stage winner Joan Barreda Bort rode his Husqvarna over the finish line after 4 hours 18 minutes 43 seconds, but is just 14th overall. Second overall and on the day was Marc Coma on a KTM, 1 minute 32 seconds behind Barreda Bort. France’s Cyrill Despres finished 3 minutes 39 seconds off the pace, but remains the leader on two wheels.
