02-16-2012 14:11 BJT

China's athletics icon Liu Xiang left for Great Britain for the Aviva Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham. At the meet, the 110 meter hurdler will face his arch-rival Dayron Robles of Cuba for the first time this year.

Liu left his training center in Shanghai on Wednesday morning, together with his coach Sun Haiping and national teammate Shi Dongpeng. They are flying to the United Kingdom for the first of four international indoor competitions.

Saturday, Liu will face world record holder Dayron Robles at the Aviva Indoor Grand Prix in Birmingham. It will be the first matchup between the duo since a controversial final at the 2011 IAAF World Championships that saw Robles disqualified from the title for intentionally obstructing Liu during the race. It will also be Liu's first formal indoor competition since he adopted a seven-step technique.

Instead of focusing on results, Liu will spend more time testing his new techique in the event.

Liu Xiang said, "There are only five hurdles in the indoor race. I want to improve my starts. The ultimate goal is undoubtedly to improve my outdoor results. I will concentrate on practicing my 7-step technique."
