Beijing sweep Zhejiang to claim 1st title

A first WCBA championship was just one win away for Beijing as they hit the hardwood this evening for game three of the finals in Zhejiang. Beijing, winning the first two games of the best of five on home court and had a chance to wrap up the title with a win on the road.

This game, close throughout and early on Katie Matra hits from down low, Zhejiang had a narrow cushion. Beijing, however, knocked off various fast breaks to trade the leads with the hosts. Zhang Yu’s bucket off the glass made it 14-13 Beijing.

Zhang then nailed a triple; Beijing would end the first quarter with 6 point lead. Zhang had 21 points on the night. Zhejiang’s national star Bian Lan checked in the second q. Bian helping to lead the home side back.

Zhejiang then ripped off a 9-0 run to trim the margin; the two sides would head into locker room at 52-all. Matra scored 21 points for the hosts, including this basket that saw Zhejiang pulling away, taking a 14 point lead midway through third quarter.

But Beijing soon regained their composure, as sharp shooting Zhang Yu again emerged as the savior. Zhang’s triple made it 4 point game minutes into final stanza. She had 21.

Less than forty seconds remaining, Beijing led 86-82, this fast break bucket, pretty much sealing it. Beijing would escape with an emphatic 89-84 win, overcoming a 14-point deficit along the way as they claim their first WCBA championship and second national title.

Xu Limin, Beijing Coach, said, "The dream has finally come true. I have been dream of becoming national champion throughout my entire career both as a player and a coach. Winning the championship has been the ultimate goal of our entire team. I’m very excited that we’ve accomplished this goal. We have made so many sacrifices and winning justifies that effort."
