Over to Spain and action from La Liga where Barcelona took on Sporting Gijon at the Nou Camp on Saturday. A Barca win would close the gap on league leader Real Madrid.

Leading scorer Lionel Messi found himself suspended for the first time in his career, but Barca still looked to keep its league title hopes alive.

Barcelona threatened early. Andres Iniesta set up Pedro, but the striker’s goal was waived off for offside. A look at the replay, no score, 9 minutes into the match.

That would change just before halftime. Adriano broke through, then Seydou Keita placed the ball ahead for Iniesta to tap into the empty net. Barca’s solid teamwork made it 1-0 at the break.

Second half and a surprise from Sporting. Home defender Gerard Pique got in a tangle with Miguel de las Cuevas and Pique was shown a harsh red card.

Then, substitute David Barral jumped in front of keeper Victor Valdes to nudge in the equaliser. Sporting tied it at 1-all.

But nervous Barca fans settled down at 79 minutes. Watch Iniesta on the break and Keita with the strike and the goal. A stunning shot into the top corner put 10-man Barcelona back on top.

8 minutes later, Iniesta set up Xavi for the third goal. Xavi finished with a neat lob, and 3-1 would be the final score. Barca cut its deficit to Real Madrid to seven points ahead of Real’s Sunday match against Espanyol.
