Chinese hurdling star Liu Xiang is looking to assert his authority in 60m event at this weekend’s IAAF World Indoor Championships in Istanbul. He’s had a mixed season so far - winning in Birmingham last month only to be disqualified for breaking in Stockholm two weeks ago. But a win for Liu in the indoor 60m finals would certainly send a message to the rest of the field and help Liu assert himself as the top bet for gold at the Summer Olympics later this year in London.

It’s been an up and down 2012 for the Chinese Olympic hero as he heads into this weekend’s World Championships in Instanbul. In his first race of the indoor season, Liu comfortably beat long-time rival Dayron Robles of Cuba in Birmingham...but then in Stockholm, Liu’s race ended before it began as he was DQ’d for a false start. Robles has withdrawn from the World’s due to injury, but the men who have the two fastest times of the year behind Liu...will be looking to knock off the 2004 Olympic Champ.

This will mark the first World Indoor final for Liu using his new starting technique, which will see him reach the first hurdle in seven steps instead of eight as he looks to go faster.

Liu Xiang, Chinese Hurdler, said, "I took the bronze medal in Birmingham in 2003. And I took the silver in Budapest in 2004. In 2008, I claimed gold in Valencia. But this time it will be a new challenge, because I will use the seven-step technique for the first time. I hope I can have a good result and a good performance as well. "

With an indoor seasons best time of 7.41 seconds, Liu will look to better that...and take home the gold in Sunday’s final in Turkey.
