Ethiopian women have for a long time ruled long distance races around the world. And Sunday a group of young and emerging female athletes honed their skills during the 9th Choice Women 5 kilometer run in Addis Ababa. The annual event is committed to empowering women.

Nearly 9000 women took part in the 9th edition of the 2012 Choice Women First 5km run, themed Empowering Women to make a difference. Participants included runners from 70 organizations in Addis Ababa, including embassies, schools, colleges, and government organizations. Over 400 free places were given out to organizations and women who could not afford to register for the run.

The winner was Senbere Tferi from Federal Maremia Betoch club who ran the course in 16 minutes and 3 seconds. The winner's prize is 600 US dollars with all participants finishing the race receiving a medal. The event has become a popular annual women's festival in Ethiopia.

Dagmanit Amare, organizer of Women First 5 Kilometer Run, said, "We launched the event on 2004, when we had 5000 participants. Now, the number has increased to 9000. The race is becoming more and more popular. The souvenirs T-shirts were sold out 5 days before the event."

Legendary long distance runner, Ethiopia's Haile Gebrselassie, took part in the award ceremony and spoke of respect for women.

Haile Gebrselassie, Ethiopian Long Distance Run Legend, said, "It's a different era. We should respect women, work with them, and serve them."

A number of organizations including the Great Ethiopian Run staged the first Women's 5km event in 2004 in connection with the celebration of International Women's Day. Messages that have been publicized through this event include "What if women decide for themselves" and "Stop Violence Against Women" endorsed by athlete Meseret Defar.
