05-04-2012 15:58 BJT

Real Madrid has returned to the top of La Liga, ending the three-year reign of bitter-rival Barcelona with a 3-0 win over Athletic Bilbao on Wednesday. And jubilant Real fans converged on Madrid’s city centre on Thursday to celebrate the club’s 32nd domestic title

Real Madrid was driven along the packed Paseo de Recoletos in an open-topped bus decked out in the club’s colours on the way to the traditional Cibeles fountain. Thousands of euphoric fans welcomed their heroes, waving white flags and chanting "Champions, Champions" as the players arrived.

Real have only lost twice all season in the league and have been extremely explosive offensively, scoring a total of 115 goals with Cristiano Ronaldo leading the way, with 44 La Liga goals with two games left. With the win, head coach Jose Mourinho becomes the first man to win league titles in his native Portugal, England, Italy and Spain.

The Portugese coaching great, was able to take his expensively-assembled side and get them to play to the quality their cost suggested as they got over the Barcelona hurdle this season. Following the win, Mourinho said it was his family and the fans who gave him the support he needed to lead Real Madrid to the Spanish league title.

Real Madrid Coach Jose Mourinho said, "Last season was not easy. My wife and my fans are always by my side and gave me the strength to conquer the title. But we have other things coming"

Real Madrid Forward Cristiano Ronaldo "I’m very happy. It is my first league title here in Spain. I’m very happy and these fans deserve this"

A Real Madrid fan said, "We are the best in the world and Barca has a complex when it comes to Madrid and Messi suffers a complex when it comes to Cristiano Ronaldo. We are the best in the world, let’s go Madrid!"
