Canoe & kayak racers aim for London

The paddling was fast and furious in Poznan, Poland on Thursday as some of Europe’s top canoers and kayakers fought it out for the final automatic qualification berths for London 2012.

The top two finishers in each event on the day, would earn their spot in this summer’s showcase.

In the men’s C1 1000m Canoe final, Germany’s Sebastien Brendel was very impressive on the day...as he led from start to finish to win the event and punch his Olympic ticket, while Chirila Josif of Romania finished second and is London-bound.

In C1 200m canoe event, Slovakia’s Lubomir Hagara finished first, while Irishman Andrzej Jezierski was second and also books his Olympic berth.

Heading now to the Kayak events, the men’s K1 200 metres was one of the closest finishes of the day, Belgium’s Maxime Richard came out on top . Just ahead of Egidijus Balciunas of Lithuania.

The next two races on the choppy water were team sprints. Russia’s Alexander Dyachenko and Yuri Postrygay won the Men’s K2 200 metre race ahead of the Swedish pair of Petter Ostrom and Erik Svensson.

But, Sweden’s women bettered their male counterparts in the K2 500 metres, by taking victory. Josefin Nordlow and Karin Johansson won the sprint ahead of Russia’s Natalia Lobova and Vera Sobetova.
