Rome's Stadio Olimpico hosted the third Diamond League athletics meeting of the season on Thursday with athletics superstar Usain Bolt stunning the crowds in the Italian capital with the fastest 100 metres of the year.

Running a relatively slow 10.04 seconds in the Czech Republic last week, some were wondering whether the world record holder was on target with his Olympic preparations. But his overnight run of 9.76 seconds puts all the doubters to bed.His previous season best of 9.82 was set at home in Jamaica this month.

Former world record-holder Asafa Powell crossed in second place in 9.91 and European champion Christophe Lemaitre was third in 10.04.

Usain Bolt, Men's 100m World Record Holder, said, "It was not the best of starts, my reaction was good, so I am proud of that, and the execution wasn't a perfect one but it was better than Ostrava and I am getting better, so hopefully Oslo will be much better than this."
