With a win, Boca Juniors would match fellow-Argentine side Independiente as the most successful club in South American history. Their opponents on the night, Brazilian side Corinthians, were also looking to make a little bit of history and lift a first continental title in franchise history.

And the Corinthians supporters fired up in Sao Paulo as they looked for their side to deny Boca Juniors their seventh continental title.

After a scoreless first half, the Brazilians broke the deadlock in the 53rd minute. Alex delivered a freekick which caused confusion in the Boca defence, Danilo protected the ball under control, delicately backheeled to Emerson, who found space and fired it into back of the net.

A great display of skill, giving Corinthians the lead.

And Corinthians would take control of this match in the 72nd minute. A poor pass from Boca’s Rolando Schiavi allowed Emerson to intercept...and the striker sped in on goal at lightning speed before finishing off with a rifle of a low shot into the corner of the net.

And Corinthians, would hold off their Argentine opponents the rest of the way to take the 2-nil win, 3-1 on aggregate to claim the Copa Libertadores crown for the first time in franchise history.
