The backline of Barcelona has gotten a boost as the club has announced the signing of fullback Jordi Alba to a five-year deal, worth a reported 14 million Euros.

The 23-year-old left back passed his medical exams earlier on Thursday and then posed with his new Barcelona bosses at the Camp Nou stadium after signing his contract. Born in the same Catalan town as Barca keeper Victor Valdes, Alba started out in the club’s youth ranks but was released before Valencia snapped him up.

Barca were in the market for a left-sided fullback following Eric Abidal’s liver transplant earlier this year left it uncertain if the France international will be able to make a return to action.

After some impressive displays for Valencia, the pacy Alba made his debut for Spain against Scotland in October and has since made the left back position vacated by Joan Capdevila his own, earning 10 caps. Alba said he saw his comeback to Barcelona as a personal challenge.

Jordi Alba said, "I had a very good Euro ’12, personal and teamwise. I don’t feel pressure for being at Barca, it is an opportunity to play in the best team in the world, where the best players are. I will try to live up to expectations and I take it as a challenge. "
