The NBA’s Los Angeles Lakers are making it official: all-star point guard Steve Nash is joining Kobe Bryant and the rest of the squad for the 2012-2013 seasons. The team brought-in Nash as part of a trade with the Phoenix Suns.

Nash signed a t3-year, $27 million contract with the Lakers on Tuesday night, one week after the trade announcement. Nash had several NBA suitors trying to sign him as a free agent, including the New York Knicks, Dallas Mavericks and Toronto Raptors.

The Canadian captured back-to-back league MVP Awards and led his team to three conference finals during his last eight years in Phoenix. He departs a rebuilding Suns team that has missed the last two postseasons. The Lakers are also trying to recapture their championship form after getting knocked out of the second round of the playoffs two years in a row. The chance to win a championship was a big draw for the 16-year veteran.

Nash averaged 12.5 points and 10.7 assists while shooting 53 percent for the Suns last season. The Lakers are expected to send four draft picks to the Suns, first-round picks in 2013 and 2015, and second-round picks in 2014 and 2015. The 38-year old Nash says he never expected to play for the Lakers, especially after trying to beat them for the past ten years.

Steve Nash, LA Lakers Point Guard, said, "You know, after, like Mitch alluded to, being such a competitor with the Lakers organization for the last decade, to actually be here now is something I never foresaw. So, I think that was a major hurdle for me just to get over visually, as a competitor but, the opportunity to play for one of the greatest franchises in professional sports, one of the most decorated franchises in one of the most wonderful cities in the world is too good an opportunity for me to pass up,"

Newly-acquired Los Angeles Lakers guard Steven Nash addresses the media during a
news conference at the team's headquarters in El Segundo, Calif., Wednesday,
July 11, 2012.
