The world's grandest sporting event is just less than two weeks away and the excitement is building amid the Olympic torch relay in Great Britain.

The symbolic flame edged a few kilometers closer to the London Olympic stadium on Saturday, day 57 of the relay. Runners carried the torch through the Isle of Wight, Southampton and Dorset in the south of England.

Torch Relay on July 14, 2012 in Lyndhurst, England.

Cheering crowds lined the streets to watch it pass, carried by a series of local athletes, celebrities and charity workers. They didn’t seem to mind the rain showers that fell throughout the day, although the flame didn’t stand up against strong winds that blew it out at least once, as it traveled up a chair lift to cross the cliffs on the Isle of Wight.

The flame returned to the mainland back at Southampton Saturday evening. It had covered more than 90 kilometers in the hands of 94 torchbearers during the day.

The torch is winding its way nearly 13,000 kilometers across the country, coming within 16 kilometers of 95 percent of the British population. It will wind up at the London Olympic Stadium, on the night of the opening ceremony, July 27th.
