At Tour de France, after the final rest day, the riders were back in action for Stage 16. Heading in, this stage was looked at as crucial to the overall picture as a daunting 197.9-km ride from Pau to Bagneres-de-Luchon, featuring four huge climbs in the Pyrenees greeted the field.

In blistering heat and humidity, a group of 38 riders broke away early, but the big climbs took their toll and the group was quicky divided.

The Stage was viewed as the final chance for defending champion Australian Cadel Evans to reduce the deficit on yellow jersey holder Bradley Wiggins of the Sky team. However, Evans crossed nearly four minutes behind Wiggins and is seventh overall, 8:06 off the pace.

After the three biggest climbs, the stage looked like a two-Frenchmen race between Thomas Voeckler and Brice Feillu. With 13 miles left, Voeckler stepped it up, pulling away.

Voeckler held onto his comfortable advantage at the head of the pack and crossed the line one minute and 40 seconds ahead of Chris Anker Sorensen of Denmark. It was the French rider’s second stage victory of the Tour.

However, a day that could have seen big changes in the overall standings, saw little change at the top. Bradley Wiggins remains in charge of the yellow jersey, leading second-place Chris Froome from Great Britain by 2 minutes 5 seconds and third-place Italian Vincenzo Nibali by 2 minutes 23 seconds. Jurgen Van Den Broeck of Belgium moves up to fourth, 5 minutes 46 seconds back.
