Two legendary rivals of English Premier League football battle at the National Stadium in Beijing Friday night. The first Winoly Cup will match Arsenal against Manchester City Football Club.

The Gunners are the oldest established side in top tier English football. Manchester City is the defending EPL champion after winning the league title for the first time in 44 years, on May 13th.

Manchester City stepped out of the shadow of rival Manchester United during the 2011-2012 season. The club built an early lead on the EPL table, and delivered a decisive 6-1 defeat to Man U at Old Trafford. City’s high-profile signings gave manager Roberto Mancini and his staff confidence that the club could finish the season on top.

But Manchester City hit a bad patch of results in the middle of the season. The club was knocked out of Champions League competition and it fell eight points behind United with six matches left in the EPL. Then, a late-season push gave City the lead back on goal difference with two matches to go.

In the season’s final game, the club trailed Queens Park Rangers 2-1 after 90 minutes. A loss would have given Manchester United the domestic crown, but City scored twice in added time to win the game, on one of sport’s most dramatic days in 2012. Now, the club seeks to go back-to-back in the always-difficult EPL.
