The city of Barcelona hosted the 25th Summer Olympic Games on July 25th 1992, exactly 20 years ago. Politicians and urban developers from all over the world usually agree that the post-Olympic transformation of the Spanish city was the greatest since London 1896, the first games of the modern era.

1992 marked the last year that both Summer and Winter Olympic Games were held in the same year. The celebration of the Games in Barcelona was believed to have a huge impact both on the urban transformation and its establishment as a world-renowned city and tourist destination. It’s agreed that no city has benefited more from its Olympic exposure Barcelona.

Sonia Castiglione said, "I think that the Olympic games have produced a push in the transformation of Barcelona. Surely this transformation has no precedent."

James Smeaton said, "I think London will cope with it very well. And I think they will use the games very positively to continue development of London as Barcelona has done for its city after 1992."

Most venues at the 1992 Olympics were located within the designated Olympic Ring. The new installations included the Picornell swimming pools and the Montjuic Olympic stadium, which was rebuilt in 1989 to serve as the Games’ main stadium. Pasqual Maragall, Barcelona’s mayor in 1992, expects London will repeat the success of the Spanish city.

Pasqual Maragall, mayor of Barcelona in 1992, said, "London will be a success. No doubt. It will be different as it won’t be as passionate and emotional. They may not have our fireworks and such. But they invented it. They invented football and most other sports."

Sant Cugat High Performance Sports Centre is located outside Barcelona. It is one of Spain’s main centres where Olympic athletes prepare for competition.

Jennifer Pareja, captain of Spanish National Female Polo Team, said, "For us to be representing Spain is a huge event. Because it is the first time it has been achieved and we feel honoured. And as for the Barcelona Games, we were all still young kids. And the fact that our debut coincides with the twentieth anniversary of the Barcelona Games is an amusing anecdote. We will enjoy both facts."

The Spanish women’s water polo team will make their Olympic debut in London.
