Michael Phelps looked to write another chapter in his incredible Olympic legacy on Thursday. The most successful Olympian in history was in position to grab his 20th career medal during the 200-metre individual medley. And a victory would make him the first male swimmer to win the same event at three successive Games.

The race was another showdown between Phelps and American teammate Ryan Lochte.

Phelps was the first to finish the butterfly portion of the race.

The Olympic favorite led, while Lochte sat in third, going into the final 50 meters.

Phelps would hold on and touch the wall first to capture his 20th Olympic medal.

Lochte settled for silver, scoring a second place finish a half hour after a disappointing bronze in his specialty, the 200 metre backstroke.
