Thursday's action marked a potential change at the top of the Olympic medal standings. China and the USA distanced themselves from the rest of the pack at London 2012.

Chinese athletes still top the table with 18 golds, 11 silvers and 5 bronze for a total of 34 medals. But the USA struck gold six times on Thursday, to draw level with China. The USA has two fewer silver medals. South Korea is third in gold medals and has a total of 14.

France ranks 4th and has won 16 medals in all. Great Britain had a day to remember. The hosts picked up three gold medals and three silver to leap to fifth place in the standings. Germany, Italy, the DPRK, Russia, and Kazakhstan take the next five positions.
